Great Challenges and Opportunities for the New Season

Rugby is great. The players don’t wear helmets or padding; they just beat the living daylights out of each other and then go for a beer. I love that.

Getting Ready for the 2017/18 Season
Although fixture dates for the upcoming season are still being finalised, details of who our 1st and 2nd XVs will be playing the the coming season have now been announced, with both teams being guaranteed 20 local fixtures each (10 home, 10 away).

Greater Challenge for the 1st XV
The 1st XV, having dominated the league last season, have been promoted into Leicestershire Merit League B and will face the likes of Stoneygate & Old Newts (both of which they defeated last season in their successful President’s Cup campaign), in addition to teams such as Market Harborough 2s, Vipers 2, and the Leicester Medics. The coming seasons opponents will provide a greater challenge than last season and Coach Guillaume Altmeyer is already looking forward to the challenge.
Last year our 1st XV saw unprecedented success thanks to the efforts put in by the players in both pre-season training and the continuous training development we worked on during the season. We are already running fitness sessions twice a week on Victoria Park to make sure we are fully prepared for the challenges ahead”. Fitness training is taking place on Victoria Park (close to London Road) on Mondays and Wednesday from 7pm – 8.30pm, and any new players wishing to join would be warmly welcomed.

Better Fixtures for the 2nd XV
The 2nd XV have this year been entered into the Leicestershire Merit League system and will be playing fixtures in Merit League C. This will mean them playing matches against teams such as Burbage 2s, Sileby 2s, and Anstey – all of whom they have played regularly over the last few seasons. A huge benefit to the 2nd XV entering the merit league is that the team will be now be guaranteed better local fixtures. Last season saw far too many occasions of local teams withdrawing from fixtures at the last minute, forcing our magician of a Fixtures Secretary, Mr Huw Dann, to pull rabbits out of hats to find willing opponents - many of whom were playing several levels above our team.

Winning the Game, then Winning the Bar
This coming season will offer our great club some mouth watering challenges & opportunities, and there is no doubt that our Club Coach, Team Captains, Committee Members and Players will rise to the occasion and continue to grow what is acknowledged across the country as finest social rugby club the world has ever seen.*
